Anki Basic and Reversed Cards for Language Learning

Anki's reversed note types can create recognition and production cards from the same information. That is convenient, but a useful forward question does not guarantee a fair reverse question.

The decision is not “Do I want to know this both ways?” It is “Does each direction train a distinct behavior with a specific, gradeable answer?”

Choose the right direction

Use a forward recognition card when you want to understand a target-language word, sentence, or audio clip. Use a reverse production card when you deliberately want to produce one bounded expression.

Do not reverse automatically when:

• several target-language translations would be natural;
• the answer is a long sentence you would never need to reproduce exactly;
• the front already contains clues that make the reverse trivial;
• recognition is the actual goal; or
• the extra scheduled card would duplicate another production exercise.

A simple noun pair such as a picture of a pear ↔ the target-language word may reverse cleanly. A sentence meaning “I forgot” may have several correct target-language forms and needs a more specific situation.

Understand Anki's three relevant note types

Basic

One note creates one card. The first field prompts the second. This is the safest default because you add only the retrieval direction you intended.

Basic (and reversed card)

One note normally creates two cards: first field → second field and second field → first field. Use it when both directions are consistently valuable for the entire note type.

Basic (optional reversed card)

This note type creates the forward card for every note and adds the reverse only when its Add Reverse field is filled. The official Anki card-generation guide documents both reverse options.

Optional reverse is usually the best language-learning default. It lets you add production selectively after asking whether the reverse has one reasonable target.

The reverse is a new card, not the same schedule viewed backward. It has its own learning and review history. If you reverse 1,000 notes, you may create roughly 1,000 additional scheduled cards.

Language-learning examples

Good candidate: concrete vocabulary

The picture identifies one concrete object. Production is reasonably bounded.

Weak candidate: open translation

The reverse accepts alternatives such as a direct “I forgot” construction. A learner may produce a correct sentence and still appear wrong.

Better production prompt

Use a dedicated Prompt field:

Your keys slipped your mind. Respond using the accidental se construction.

Now the card specifies the situation and the desired pattern. The answer remains language production rather than verbatim translation.

Phrase with register

A reverse card for a greeting should identify the relationship or setting if register matters. “Say hello” is too open; “Greet a shopkeeper politely in the morning” is more honest.

Sentence recognition plus audio production feedback

The reverse front can use a bounded scenario while the back reveals the target sentence and native audio. Do not autoplay that audio on the front, because it supplies the answer. Keep sound placement separate through dedicated Anki media fields.

Control review load and sibling interference

When two sibling cards from one note appear close together, one direction can remind you of the other. That is not always harmful, but it can make a review look easier than independent recall.

Use this workflow:

1. Start with recognition.
2. Review the expression in context for several days.
3. Add the optional reverse only if you genuinely want to produce it.
4. Make the production prompt specific enough to accept one target or a narrow set.
5. Suspend a direction that adds time without exposing useful failures.

Do not add reverse cards merely to make the deck “complete.” Completeness is not the goal; useful retrieval is.
